Print book vs Kindle and happy to see my close friend read our book

Our book is available on Kindle; great.
However, for me a print book feels intimate. She can be held closer, she feels warmer, even holds a fragrance and warmth within her pages that can make you dwell deeper, and hang longer with her just like close friends do.  #DirectorsDiaries

Happy to see my dear friend read our book.

When to speak, when to be silent. #SalimKhan #DirectorsDiaries

I once asked screenwriter Salim Khan to define a film director;

Salim Khan replied: ‘Frank Capra made a film after a gap of nearly five years. He was asked, “Why took you so long to make your new film?” Capra replied: “I did not have anything to say, until now!” On the other hand, a journalist complimented an outstanding prime minister of a country, “Sir, you speak well; and you really know what to say!” The prime minister replied, “It’s more important to know when to be or remain silent.” For me, both define a director.’

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And if that first step is in the right direction, you will hit home for sure."

(A review by Neelam Singh at Amazon.in: 5 stars )

That’s what ‘Directors’ Diaries’ is for me – a navigator of sorts and I’m sure this holds true for a lot of fellow film makers. At a time when wanting to make a film can remain a far-fetched dream, the book just waltzes along and nudges you dance to your own tune. In other words, make your film, come what may. Things are bound to happen or not happen and it’s all just part of the 1000-mile journey you just started.

Directors' Diaries; A peek into the lives’ and souls’ of some the finest film makers gives us more hope and also an added dash of respect, for their perseverance. Nobody said it was going to be easy and Rakesh Anand Bakshi in all earnest has put out that map or path in front of us.

Each interview makes one feel like they are part of the conversation and the simplistic Q&A style answers questions no film school can ever do. Not only does the book serve as a guide, it also helps one sharpen the saw in terms of film making techniques and nuances.

‘Directors’ Diaries’ is a masterpiece and serves us well in reminding us that it takes a lifetime to get that stroke right, or in our case, get that shot right!

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And if that first step is in the right direction, you will hit home for sure. That is what this book means to me.

Thanks #RakeshAnandBakshi – the genie of the book.

One of those people that will read a book over and over at different times in her life and take something new out of it every time.

A review. By Maithili Pamwani; one of those people that will read a book over and over at different times in her life and take something new out of it every time.

I’ve never personally known someone whose written a book before, so it was very exciting to get a signed copy delivered to my home. I attacked it immediately as I’m quite the voracious reader, one of those people that will read a book over and over at different times in my life and take something new out of it every time.

Why someone chooses a certain path in life has always intrigued me, especially a path that seems completely beyond their immediate life and circumstances. Therefore stories of those directors that have not grown up in a film family, had no real exposure to films barring the occasional outing to the local movie theater really made for an interesting read for me. Brave people that came to the big bad city to start their struggle led only by their love for the movies, passion to make a mark and most importantly a belly full of stories to tell.

We read so much about the actors, their lives, some of their struggles but what of the story tellers themselves. The ones without whom there would not be a movie. Those that really bring the characters to life on screen, weave their magic and have us enthralled for a couple of hours in the story, in the visuals and in the life of the characters that sometimes leave us gasping for more.

Rakesh has put together a motley group of directors from the old timers like Subhash Ghai, who was way ahead of his time and made iconic films like Karz and Meri Jung, to Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Basu whose next movies I am waiting to watch.

I look forward to reading Rakesh’s and HarperCollin's Volume 2 of Director's Diaries, it would be interesting to see which directors he puts together this time and like so many other books in my life I bet I’ll pick up Directors Diaries again and again at different times in my life to get inspired, have a chuckle or just believe again that dreams sometime do really come true.

You will find your own path somewhere in reading about their paths to success. #DirectorsDiaries

The idea is that when you read about how successful directors without any film background made it here, you get the faith that you too will, even if these directors do not directly show you a path you will still see your own somewhere in these pages and not give up and get that extra grit that one needs to succeed in any profession, especially films as in this profession there are never any 'Wanted' job ads appearing in papers when they need an assistant or a lyrics writer or an editor or a director. You just got to find your way up the ladder somehow.

First review from our first East African reader of #DirectorsDiaries

Review of #DirectorsDiaries from our first East African reader, at Goodreads. - Ritesh Barot

It requires tremendous efforts to document and write such a book. 12 of Bollywoods most prolific filmmakers/ Directors giving the audience an in-depth insight into the "road to their first film" is worthy of applause. #RakeshAnandBakshi has truly researched and written an undeniably gripping, educative and entertaining book. #DirectorsDiaries begins with a brief introduction of author Rakesh Anand Bakshi followed by a wonderful picture with his father the Legendary lyricist #AnandBakshi to whom this wonderful book is dedicated.

After a brilliantly focused, precise and informative foreword by Meghna Puri (Daughter of legendary filmmaker Subhash Ghai, & President of Whistling Woods International) it is clear that this book has educational value to upcoming talents and those enrolled in courses at the academy.

The foreword by Professor Karl Bardosh (New York University) further sets the mood for the book, explaining the art of film making, artistic quality & craft of film making (or being an Auteur).

A beautifully written introduction highlights the importance of direction during the film making process. The book then begins to unravel the stories we have all been waiting for since the initial viewing of the front cover ( as the cover of the book shows twelve photographs, each capturing a profile of a filmmaker). Anurag Basu, Asutosh Gowarikar, Farah Khan, Govind Nihalani, Imtiaz Ali, Mahesh Bhatt, Prakash Jha, Santosh Sivan, Subhash Ghai, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Vishal Bhardwaj, Zoya Aktar - each give us a candid account of their lives, what led them to film making, their journey into the film world and their personal journeys that shaped their vision in film making.

Beautifully written interview like segments keep the readers attention affixed to the content. I am a film buff, yet I was unaware of the journey, personal struggles or of the interesting theatre, television shows and movies these wonderful filmmakers were associated with at the very beginning of their foray into the film land. Truly gripping reading material.

Without giving much away, I would like to emphasize that this book Directors Diaries by Rakesh Anand Bakshi is a "Must Read - Must Have" book for all who are interested in bollywood films; for all interested in film making; for all interested in anecdotes and glimpses into the life of a director/filmmaker; for those seeking real life stories of encouragement and most importantly, for all interested in reading good content - as this book surely has captivating content.

Huge round of applause for the tremendous efforts by Rakesh Anand Bakshi into bringing Directors Diaries into fruition and we truly are a very lucky audience to have such an captivating, entertaining and equally educative book available.

On Farah Khan:
#FarahKhan 's segment it truly interesting. From what I have understood, Farah is truly very passionate about filmmaking. Farah explains how choreography was like an internship to becoming a director.
She mentions "There are different ways different actors need to be handled; that is why I said in the beginning that a director required the skill of dealing with people to help them reach the director's level", and "there are different ways of handling difficult egos, sometimes you speak to them like a family member, sometimes they just want some sincere attention, a smile maybe; sometimes you have to scream at them, whatever it takes to get the best for your film"

It is after reading this segment that I understood the dilemma of a director, and as an audience we are unaware of their strain in making a good movie, because when we see the end product, such as Main Hoon Naa, we are truly filled with joy and are cheerful, and take back fond memories and look forward to repeated viewings, without the awareness of the intensity of work involved, editing involved and directorial contribution. Truly applause the work of Directors and editors.

Worth the wait for this book! (5 stars review on Amazon.uk by a Teacter for Research methods, media and culture, UK)

WORTH THE WAIT! (Review on Amazon.com by Herminder Kaur UK)

5.0 out of 5 stars - Worth the Wait - 28 Aug. 2015
By Hermi113

This was a much anticipated book, but you know what they say, best things come to those that wait.
This was one book definitely worth the wait. It is simply structured and written, making it easy for someone like me that studies media and communication and takes much interest in movies., as a academic and movie lover.
However learning from the stories that are told by many director's is a special insight. Rakesh Bakshi does a fantastic job of weaving together the different interviews he has carried out and presenting them in one book which is a true asset to a student but also those interested in just knowing more about movies and the lives of filmmakers.

There are many things to be learnt in just one book and this is why I would highly recommend this book.
